Senator Bernie Sanders, Tom Perez Still To Speak At Event Today Hosted By AZ Dem Party, After Party Took And Used $40K From BackPage.com Executives
PHOENIX (April 21) — Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez are both on record speaking about the atrocities of human sex trafficking, but they’re speaking tonight at an event hosted by the Arizona Democratic Party, who recently accepted and used $40,000 from the executives and relatives of backpage.com. The website is known for turning a blind eye to ads trafficking women and children, and the CEO was recently arrested and charged with pimping.
DNC Chairman Tom Perez, when he was Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice said:
“Human trafficking — the equivalent of modern day slavery — is an affront to human dignity, and goes against everything our country stands for. And yet, it occurs in so many communities; workers are exploited for labor behind closed doors, hidden from the public eye. This includes horrific incidents of sex trafficking, where women and girls are forced into prostitution, often after being lured from other countries with promises of legitimate employment and better lives.”
While the Arizona Democratic Party took and used $40,000, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema took over $53,000 between her campaign and her PAC. She only donated it LAST WEEK after she was called out by the Arizona Republic — she had held onto some of the money for 1338 days.
Recently announced Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Garcia also took $2,000 from the website’s executives in 2014. He only donated the money after he was approached about it earlier this week.
“Senator Sanders and Tom Perez are talking out of both sides of their mouth,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Jonathan Lines. “They’ve both spoken strongly against human trafficking, but apparently have no problem with the Arizona Democratic Party taking and using money that’s affiliated with child sex trafficking. Their actions speak much louder than their words, and their actions show they don’t care the Arizona Democratic Party accepted and used this money. It’s disgusting. Arizonans deserve better.”
